Success
Sorry it's been so long since I've posted anything - I've been having problems with my Blogger account lately for one thing, and for another, most of the poetry I've been writing lately is a little too personal to share on a public blog... :-)
I wrote this poem thinking about how we tend to search for significance, and often measure that feeling of significance by numbers - the number of games we've won, the number of friends we have, even the number of people we've led to Christ. But instead we need to find our significance in Christ, in living as He calls us to, even if it doesn't look significant in the world's eyes.
Success
We measure our success in numbers,
As if we’d build ourselves a staircase
To reach the throne of God itself,
But life is filled empty hearts:
It takes a heart that reaches out
And makes a bond with just one other
The world is changed for each forever,
Success beyond what we have run for…
We fill our resumes with boasting,
But we are losing what’s important—
To see, to hear, to touch, to love,
When we will choose to sacrifice
Our own desires, which pull us down—
We’ll find success as a seed which dies,
In letting go of all we dream of
And finding blessings unexplored…
